Understanding the Whitewater on the Rogue River in Oregon One of the big questions that people have when they start...
Rogue River whitewater rafting is unlike any other whitewater raft trip in the United States. Where else can you raft a wilderness river and stay in a comfortable lodge each evening? We are one of few river outfitters able to provide these lodge-to-lodge rafting trips due to our special relationships with the exclusive riverside lodges. Our long whitewater rafting history and relationships allow us to offer the pinnacle experience on the Rogue!
The Rogue River is one of the most famous whitewater river adventures in the American West, and for good reason. Flowing from the Cascade Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, ROW’s Oregon rafting trip takes place on the most scenic section of the river flowing through the heart of the Rogue River Wilderness. Fun, intermediate rapids, warm water, and a green-forested canyon makes the Rogue the perfect natural playground for the best whitewater rafting experience. To top it off, each night you stay at a remote riverside lodge where you enjoy your own double occupancy room (solo travelers can have their very own room with a single supplement fee) with a private bathroom.
During the day you raft through the rivers' splashy rapids and, in the quiet pools between, watch for deer, black bear, river otters and a variety of birds that make this canyon their home. Like all the best whitewater rafting trips in the world, there's plenty of variety both on and off water. On shore we walk along superb hiking trails and ROW guides share their favorite places with you, including historic homesteads, secret pools that you can jump into, and the rich stories of the river canyon. Few rivers offer such a magical blend of fun suitable for all ages as the Rogue does.
We offer both three and four-day trips, both of which cover the same number of river miles. Our four-day trip spends one more night in the canyon and allows for a more relaxed pace. You also experience one of the most incredible riverside lodges, Half Moon Bar Lodge, on the third night. If you like the idea of more time for off-river exploring and hiking, and the idea of having more time for our guides to share their favorite places with you, the four-day Rogue River rafting tour is a perfect choice.
Each lodge along the river is unique and has its own flavor and spectacular setting. Black Bar Lodge is set back about 200 yards from the river’s edge at the base of a mountain, with a large lawn that is perfect for playing frisbee and watching stars. There are individual cabins for guests. By contrast, Marial Lodge is closer to the river and perched among the trees, with mountains and forests behind. Guests stay in one of our couple lodge buildings with multiple rooms in the same building. Half Moon Bar Lodge is set on a bench above the river among a mix of hardwood and evergreen forest. It also has a large grassy meadow, perfect for playing catch and moon-gazing. Guests stay in lodge rooms in a central building, or in one of the small cabins. All the lodges have a common area for guests to gather. At each, the staff are warm and welcoming, meals are lovingly prepared and the views of the river canyon, always inspiring. Accommodations are simple and comfortable; the showers are hot and the toilets flush. The combination of raw nature during the day coupled with creature comforts at night is one that guests love.
We welcome you to come raft this wild and scenic river with ROW Adventures! If you're looking for additional information you may also enjoy our Blogs discussing the Best Time of Year to Raft the Rogue River as well as What Class of Rapids are on the Rogue River.
We pride ourselves in running a relaxed and flexible schedule. Your expert guide will tailor each day to the group's energy and the conditions, ensuring the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and discovery. The following is a sample of what your trip might be like:
For people that want a more relaxed pace with more time to explore the canyon, our four-day Rogue River rafting trip is the preferred choice. It has an added benefit of staying the third night at Half Moon Bar Lodge, a place we love due to their shared values of superlative guest service and sharing stories of natural and cultural history with you.
We meet you at Morrison’s Lodge on your first morning, having already been prepared by your orientation meeting the evening before. It’s a brief, 20-minute drive to our launch point where we have our safety talk, get everyone fitted with a PFD (personal flotation device) and then load up into our river craft. We typically have a mix of oar-powered rafts, paddle rafts and a couple of inflatable kayaks.
The first few miles of river rafting on the Rogue are fairly mild, but there are some splashy rapids to kickstart the day with fun. As the sun warms up the canyon, we reach a side creek called Grave Creek, and our first class III rapid of the day.
It’s not long after that that we arrive at Rainey Falls, which is a steep class V rapid that we have guests walk around while we run our rafts through a side channel called the Fish Ladder. Once we’re all on the other side of the falls, we float a short distance and stop for lunch, often at a place called Whisky Creek. Here we learn the colorful story of early miners in the area.
After lunch we have a nice long stretch of river with numerous Class II and Class III rapids including Big Slide Riffle, Tyee, Wildcat, Montgomery, Slim Pickens and Upper and Lower Black Bar. By late afternoon we’re ready to land on the banks by Black Bar Lodge. We walk from the rafts to the lodge where the lodge staff welcomes us and we check in. There’s time to walk around the property, enjoy the resident deer and breathe in the fresh mountain air. Soon it’s time for ROW’s special-touch appetizers along with complimentary beer, sodas and southern Oregon wines. Dinner is set on a long table in the lodge and served family style. There’s always plenty and the day’s activities will give you a good appetite. After dessert you might want to star-gaze, play some cards or relax with your favorite book. At 10:00pm the lodge generator is turned off and the night sky shines!
Morning starts with the sound of birds and soon coffee and tea are served in the lodge dining room followed by a bountiful breakfast and talk about the fun day of rafting that lies ahead. After breakfast, guides shuttle your river bags to the rafts and as the sun starts to warm the canyon, we launch for a fantastic day of exploration and laughter. Our first rapid is Horseshoe Bend and is an exciting one. Other Class II and III rapids include Telephone Hole, Meadow Creek, Kelsey Shoots, Dulog, Battle Bar riffle, Island Rapids and China Bar. We stop for lunch somewhere along the way, perhaps at a historic site or spot with a good walk. Later in the afternoon, we arrive at the Rogue River Ranch. The Rogue River Ranch is a fascinating place to visit and as we wander through the old ranch buildings, we get a great sense of early pioneer history. Nearby is a delightful swimming hole and jump rock at Mule Creek.
By late afternoon we arrive at Marial Lodge, home for our second night. We unload the rafts and carry our bags to our assigned rooms. Soon it’s time for ROW’s yummy happy hour hors d’oeuvres. A family-style dinner is served and is always a guest favorite. Then there’s time for a spectacular hike through forest and on a trail perched above the river canyon. Returning close to dark, there’s time for conversation and sharing stories before heading for bed.
Since we don’t have too many river miles today, we enjoy breakfast a bit later. This is a day of exciting whitewater that starts off as we float through turbulent Mule Creek Canyon and the bubbly constriction in the river known as the Coffee Pot. At the very end of the canyon, we duck into a small cove with an enchanting waterfall falling into the river. Soon we stop at the top of Blossom Bar Rapid to take a quick look at the best route through. After navigating the boulder-choked rapid we celebrate! Then on to Devils Staircase!
The excitement of the morning fills everyone with energy and soon it’s time to stop for lunch on one of the Rogue’s sandy beaches. We enjoy some more hiking and soon arrive at our evening’s accommodation, Half Moon Bar Lodge, a historic, family-run lodge filled with warmth and good vibes. Set above the river on a spacious bench of grass and forest, Half Moon Bar is an idyllic place. We enjoy the afternoon playing on the expansive lawn, taking a hike or relaxing with a book. It’s nice to just slow down and soak in the magic of the river.
A delicious lodge dinner is followed by lively stories of the day, perhaps a game of cribbage or some soothing guitar music. As darkness descends it’s time for head to meet pillow for a wonderful reunion.
We rise up and greet the day, each in our own way. For some this might be a quiet walk while for others it’s a fresh cup of steaming coffee or tea. We gather around the tables for another delicious breakfast. Then we saunter down the hill to our rafts for a fun day of more Rogue River scenery and bouncy class II and III rapids such as Quarter Inch, Solitude, Payton, Tacoma, Crooked and Mermaid riffles. The scenery delights and side creeks dance into the river.
We pull over for our final lunch set among volcanic rocks and hardwood forest. After a celebratory toast to reflect on the events of the past few days, we float a few more miles to the take-out at Foster Bar. Our goal is to arrive by 3:00 pm. Those who had their cars shuttled will find them here while the rest load up into a van or two for the two-hour drive through the mountains to return to Morrison’s Lodge. Expect to be back there about 5:00 pm.

The evening before your trip launches, we offer an informative orientation meeting at Morrison’s Lodge where most of our guests stay the night before their Rogue River rafting trip. The next morning we depart from Morrison’s Lodge for a short drive to the Rand Boat Launch put-in or launch point. We fit you with a PFD (personal flotation device) and then give a safety talk to prepare you for the trip. After the safety talk, we divide into oar rafts, paddle rafts, and inflatable kayaks.
The rafting starts off gently, but it isn’t long before we come to our first fun rapids. Sometime before noon, we enter the Congressionally-designated Wild section of the Wild and Scenic Rogue River at a rapid called Grave Creek. Generally, we will eat lunch the first day just below the Class V rafting rapid called Rainey Falls (guests walk around this rapid). The afternoon is filled with several Class II and Class III rapids including Tyee, Wildcat, Russian, Washboard and Black Bar Falls. We arrive at our evening accommodation at Black Bar Lodge around 4:30 or 5:00pm. While you are being assigned to your cabin and cleaning up, a special touch and ROW extra, is our presentation of evening hors d’oeuvres as well as complimentary regional wine, beer and sodas for you to enjoy before the lodge dinner. You might want to take a short hike around the property, visit with your fellow travelers, or play a few games that are offered at the lodge. Around 7:00pm dinner is served in the cozy lodge dining room. Lodge dinners are served family-style with long tables. After dinner, guests can play cards, visit, play the lodge guitar or go outside and gaze at a star-filled sky. Around 10:00pm. Black Bar Lodge's generator is shut down, so we encourage you to bring flashlights since the property can get very dark.
Coffee and tea are served in the lodge dining room around 7:00 am with breakfast served about 7:30. It’s a hearty breakfast to fill you with the energy needed for an amazing day of Rogue River rafting. After breakfast, it’s time to pack up and then we carry our gear back to the rafts in the river and launch around 9:00 for another day of exploring and fun. Today you go through a series of bouncing, exciting Class II and III rapids including Horseshoe Bend, Telephone Hole, Dulog, China Bar and more! We stop for lunch somewhere along the way, perhaps at a historic site or spot with a good walk. Later in the afternoon, we arrive at the Rogue River Ranch. The historic Rogue River Ranch is a fascinating place to visit and a vivid example of life in the American West in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. The house has been made into a simple museum along with the blacksmith shop and tack room. We also take you to one of our favorite jump rocks and swimming holes in Mule Creek that flows through the ranch property.
It's a short float downstream to Marial Lodge, our home for the second night. Once again, guests are assigned rooms and then we serve our delicious hors oeuvres for the ROW “happy hour.” These are served on a spacious deck with fantastic views of the river canyon. Dinner is served around 6:30 here and again is a family-style affair, this time with round tables. After dinner, one of our guides will generally lead guests on a lovely hike that passes through a fragrant forest and then along a bench set high above the river. We end the hike where we can look down to a spectacular waterfall before turning back to Marial. Back at the lodge there may be some guitar music or card games before you head to bed dreaming about what is next on this Oregon rafting trip!
This is a big day with plenty of river miles, so we wake up early to the sound of birdsong and quiet. Breakfast is served around 8:00 and afterwards, everyone packs up and before long we are back on the water and rafting the Rogue River. This is a day of awesome rapids and whitewater that starts off with the legendary Mule Creek Canyon and percolating Coffee Pot. Soon after we pull over to scout Blossom Bar, the most technically difficult rapid on the Rogue, choked full of boulders. Guests have the option of walking around if they prefer. Then next up is Devils Staircase, where the river funnels from wide to narrow, creating bouncy, fun waves.
After those three rapids, the river widens and slows down and for the rest of our day we have relatively easy Class II and III rapids. When the sun is high overhead, we stop for another bountiful riverside lunch and reflect on our wonderful Rogue River rafting adventure. A couple more hours of floating and we arrive at the take-out at Foster Bar, usually around 3:00 pm. If you had your car shuttled, it’s waiting in the parking lot. Otherwise, we load up into vans for the two-hour drive over the mountains back to Morrison's Lodge. We usually have you back at your vehicle around 5:00 or 5:30 pm.

Weather in any river canyon can vary widely day to day. However, the Rogue’s typical daytime temperatures can climb into the 80’s & 90’s, with the water temperature generally 60-70 degrees. Early and late season trips can also have temperatures ranging from 60-80. While blue skies & sunshine are predominant, rain can happen any time so please bring rain gear! To best prepare for your upcoming trip, we recommend reading our blogs about packing and dressing for hot and cold weather rafting trips.
You won’t have to worry about going hungry on our Rogue river rafting trips. We feed you from lunch the first day through lunch the last day. The food is fantastic (even if we do say so ourselves), and there is plenty of it. While we provide a modest amount of beer and wine, you are welcome to bring additional beer, wine, soda or other refreshments. We ask that beer and soda not be in glass containers.
If you have special dietary needs (ex. vegetarian, allergies, etc.) we can accommodate these easily on our camping Rogue rafting trips. Just complete the section regarding dietary needs on your trip application form and we will be prepared for your arrival.
Please note: On the lodge-to-lodge rafting trips the lodges provide meals from a set menu, therefore they may not be as flexible. If you would like to discuss your specific needs, please feel free to give us a call or email us.
ROW Adventures is able to accommodate people with physical limitations, disabilities, and medical conditions; please speak with your Adventure Consultant if you have questions or think you will require any additional assistance while on the trip. If you use medications it is recommended to bring two supplies packed in separate, watertight containers. If you carry an insect sting kit, be certain to bring it in your day pack. If you use a CPAP machine, please note that the first lodge DOES NOT run their generator from 10 PM to 7 AM. If it is critical that you use a CPAP, please plan ahead and purchase an independent battery pack. You can find these at www.cpap.com.
ROW provides all the essential camping gear like tents, sleeping bags, pads, chairs, and more. You're only responsible for bringing your clothing and personal items such as toiletries, camera, etc. Most guests already have what they need, but some may need to pick up items like rain gear or quick-dry clothing. We provide a complete packing list for every trip, along with tips on what to bring.
Need something? Our online store is stocked with guide-approved gear to help you stay comfortable and prepared out on the water.
For all intents and purposes, you will be unreachable while on the river. However, give our office phone number - (208) 765-0841 - to the individual(s) who would be responsible for notifying you in an emergency. While we cannot guarantee we will be able to contact you, we will use all our resources to reach you. Our office hours are Monday through Friday.
We are very proud of our guides. Their hard work, dedication, river knowledge, and attention to detail truly sets them apart from the others. If you feel your guides have gone above and beyond the call of duty in providing you with a very special trip, a gratuity may be left at the end of the trip. You can leave the tip with the team leader. They can be counted on to share the trip with all the trip guides. A tip ranging between 10-20% of your trip cost per guest is typical.
The same applies to the lodge staff at the lodges where you will be staying. If you feel that you have been well served, we recommend a $10.00 per guest gratuity be given to the staff after breakfast each morning.
Your reservation is confirmed upon receipt of deposit which is on a first come, first served basis. The balance is due 60 days prior to the launch date of your trip by check. If final payment is not received when due, we reserve the right to regard the reservation cancelled.
Should you have to cancel your Rogue River rafting trip plans, deposits are non-refundable. After the final balance due date, all payments become non-refundable. Alternate guests are welcome. Please understand that we cannot ensure your investment in river trip reservations. We strongly recommend the purchase of trip cancellation and interruption insurance.
Once you sign up, we lose the right to sell your reserved space to other individuals or groups. Our number of trips and spaces per trip are limited by river management plans. Therefore, we regret that we cannot make exceptions for personal emergencies. Should you decide to cancel your trip with us, your trip cost is not transferable to another year.
Cancellation and interruption insurance can include full refund should you cancel due to health, medical, or several other reasons. If you cannot afford to forfeit your reservation investment, you should purchase trip cancellation insurance.
Travel Protection insurance will be added to your invoice to review. If you do not wish to purchase the recommended travel protection insurance please contact the office.
Of course, we accept personal checks and money orders but we also accept all major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express) for the deposit. We require the final balance to be paid by check. Our prices listed are cash rates. If you wish to use your credit card the final payment amount is subject to a 3% fee.
Yes! Everyone on a ROW trip wears a Coast Guard-approved PFD (personal flotation device). These are designed to keep you afloat in the event that you find yourself in the river. Many non-swimmers go on rafting trips and they have a great time. It is more important that you are not afraid of the water. Non-swimmers should not go on class IV+ or class V trips. Please call us if you have any concerns about this.
Please visit our Essential Eligiblity Requirments page for a list of the minimum physical requirement to join a ROW trip.
Wilderness travel and whitewater rafting have inherent risks and ROW does a number of things to manage these risks. It begins when you first contact us. We'll help you select a trip that matches your experience and abilities. On the river you will find that our guides are carefully chosen, skilled professionals with the appropriate training and experience. We use the best available equipment and give a thorough safety briefing prior to all departures. If you're nervous about whitewater, you might want to start off on our Missouri River canoe trip along the Lewis and Clark Trail in Montana or a milder whitewater trip such as the Grande Ronde.
All our guides are certified in first aid and river rescue. Many have had advanced training specific to the wilderness environment in which we operate and are certified as Wilderness First Responders or Emergency Medical Technicians. Thus we are able to cope with most on-river accidents. If in our judgment, evacuation is deemed necessary we have several options depending on weather and our location. Sometimes we are near remote ranches or roads that we can use to evacuate. We carry a satellite telephone along with a GPS on trips lasting three or more days. (Cell phones don't work in the remote areas where we travel.) We can use these to contact emergency transport, including helicopters. Evacuation, if needed, can take from as little as a couple of hours to as many as 24 hours, or in extreme cases, longer than this depending on the situation, weather and location.
What should I do if I fall out of the boat? Before you go on any trip you'll be given extensive instructions on what to do if you fall in and how to float in the river. Believe it or not, many people love falling out of the boat. It's exciting. But it can be disorienting and a little overwhelming at first. Many people have taken multiple trips and never fallen in. Some people fall out on their first trip. Follow your guide's instructions and your "swim" could be the most exciting part of your trip!
It's important to drink plenty when you're outdoors so ROW provides fresh drinking water at all times. In camp, there's also juice, herbal tea, black tea, coffee, and cocoa. We provide two complimentary sodas and two beers per person, per day and complimentary wine with dinner. If you wish to bring more sodas, beer, or other alcoholic drinks to enjoy in the evening, bring them along. We'll have cocktail ice.
We do not run cargo boats ahead to the lodges. We will all travel as a group and arrive at the lodges together.
If you're riding in an oar-powered raft on one of our multi-day trips then you can fish between the rapids during the day. We also offer special fishing trips.
Absolutely! You will want to capture the stunning scenery. We provide waterproof camera boxes that fit most cameras and small video cameras. Please realize you will not have cell service.
Extra Luggage can be stored at Morrison's Lodge while on the river and retrieved upon return at the end of the adventure.

Rogue River Rafting Trip Staying in Lodges
We had a fantastic 4-day, 3-night lodge trip on the Rogue with ROW. Our guides, Ryan and Anna, were knowledgeable, safety-oriented, extremely hard working, accommodating, and super fun. The wild and scenic section of the Rogue is a treasure with incredible landscapes and interesting history. The food was excellent. ROW has excellent communication with the client leading up to the trip. This is a professional outfit that has clearly selected the best employees.
Fantastic week on the Rogue River
We had an amazing week on the Rogue with our guides Ryan and Anna. Our two boys, ages 18 and 20, have an enormous amount of energy and they stayed happily entertained the whole time. We saw 4 bears, tons of deer, eagles and more. The scenery was spectacular and the rafting was a blast. The trip was a mix of adventure and relaxation and amazing food. I highly recommend ROW and this trip! The Half Moon Bar lodge is very special with amazing staff and owner. Cannot say enough positive remarks about our guides — Ryan and Anna were the best! Thank you for everything!
